Whoa!nus: True Crime — UNAUTHORIZED AUTOBIOGRAPHY feat. Danielle Steel

Whoa!mance is once again donning their trench coats and magnifying glasses to bring you the only romance novel-specific crime conversations on the web. This time around, Morgan takes Isabeau on a journey to one of the dreariest corners - FAMILY COURT - via one of the most sparkling highways - CELEBRITY.

Danielle Steel.......'s husband sued two writers from People Magazine to keep adoption records sealed, and a book off the shelves in the process, and lost. But that particular champagne problem seems to have aged into a Wonder Bread problem while we were all signing up for the pre-Metaverse.

What responsibility do we have to our inspirations, particularly when they can't collect alimony? What makes a celebrity? Does it matter when we've all got the same amount of public information? Who owns your earrings?

A warning shot on data and privacy comin' at ya from 1993.

I’m joined by Morgan and Isabeau from the Whoa!Mance podcast! They are celebrating three years of podcasting, and their latest exploration of romance has been to look at category romances. I thought it would be fun to take a deep dive into a brand new contemporary romance, so we all read Awakened by the CEO’s Kiss by Therese Baharrie.

This episode is a low-spoiler discussion of the book, and of all the interesting and subversive things that it does. We cover kiss tension, books that give you chest tingles, and more. You can listen if you’ve read it, or if you haven’t, but you might really like this book so we recommend it either way!

Whoa!Nus: The Category Is.....

Answer: Announcing an exploration into the oft overlooked but undeniably pervasive works known as Category Romance.

Answer, but in the form of a question: What is the topic of this week's Whoa!nus?

Yr girls Isabeau & Morgan are excited to share their big summer plans: CATEGORY IS. Each week a new Category Romance (from Isabeau’s own random box of romance) published in a different post-war-pre-low-rise-jeans decade.

Monthly Doubles on the board, category is: Category Is.

This week’s episode of Whoa!mance is brought to you by An Earl, The Girl and a Toddler by Vanessa Riley. Available now from Kensington Books.

Whoa!nus: Crossover w/ @ShelfLove: Strange Love

This week yr grls had the supreme pleasure of meeting up with @Shelflove to discuss Strange Love by Ann Aguirre. A mistaken identity trope leads to an alien abduction of a human Earth woman. Admitted she doesn't have a ton going on so why not compete in a Hunger Games style version of intergalactic Bachelor? It sounds crazy on paper but this romance is a thought piece on difference and accommodation. Buckle up for a space odyssey of love.

Whoa!nus: 3 Years of Whoa!

Believe it or not y’all, yr girls Morgan and Isabeau have been behind the mic for 3 whole years. But now we want to hear from you! We are asking you, dear listeners, to send us brief recordings of yourselves that we will weave into a patchwork quilt of Whoa!s to keep us all wrapped and warm in this ever-encroaching winter of our collective discontent.

What romance novel continues to hit that special spot only a true Whoa! can titillate? What’s your favorite Whoa!? Your most problematic Whoa!? A criminally underrated Whoa!? A Whoa! that doesn’t get the love that it, that we all, deserve?

Whether your chosen median is a voice memo, a laptop microphone, or two cans held fast by string - as long as that recording can make its way to our inbox, we’ll make sure to include it. Please send all submissions to Whoamancemail@gmail.com in either .mp3 or .wav format post haste, and we’ll get stitching!

Whoa!nus: The Monster Ball — Part 2

The Monster's Ball.jpg

Yr girls are fresh from the cliffs and ready to slay some fey. This week, Morgan and Isabeau are back at the Ball with another selection from The Monster Ball Year 2; Assassin’s Match by Everly Frost. Our heroine Tanzanina (yikes) is a born-witch whose power and love have been stripped from her by an evil curse. But when her only hope of lifting the curse, a special spellbook, is stolen, our heroine must put herself in danger for a night of thrills and passion at the Monster Ball. Are magic-at birth-narratives ultimately trojan horses for eugenics? Is Paradise Lost just Bible fan fiction? How do we cope when our love is not reciprocated? All that, plus musings on birth order, gargoyles, and the perfect hot buttered rum. Happy spooky season y’all.
